What Is Mitragynine?
Mitragynine is the primary active alkaloid in the kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa). Understanding it helps clarify how kratom affects the brain and how it relates to the far more potent 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH).

Definition
Mitragynine is the most abundant alkaloid in kratom leaf, accounting for most of its natural activity. It interacts with opioid receptors as well as other receptor systems, which is why kratom's effects can feel both stimulating at low doses and sedating at higher ones.
How mitragynine affects the body
At the opioid receptor, mitragynine is a relatively weak partial agonist. However, the body metabolizes some mitragynine into 7-OH, a much stronger compound, which contributes significantly to kratom's opioid-like effects and dependence potential.
Mitragynine vs 7-OH
Mitragynine is abundant but comparatively weak; 7-OH is present in only trace amounts in natural leaf but is far more potent. Concentrated 7-OH products amplify this stronger compound, which is what makes them so risky.
