What is 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)?

7-hydroxymitragynine, often abbreviated as 7-OH, is one of more than 40 alkaloids identified in the kratom plant. Alkaloids are naturally occurring chemical compounds that often have pharmacological effects in humans and animals. While kratom contains many alkaloids, 7-OH and mitragynine are generally considered the most significant in terms of their potential effects.

Research suggests that 7-OH is a potent compound, even though it is present in much smaller quantities than mitragynine in raw kratom leaves. Its presence and concentration can vary significantly depending on the kratom strain, harvesting methods, and processing.

Natural Occurrence in Kratom Leaves

In its natural state, 7-OH is found in the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. However, its concentration in fresh or dried kratom leaves is typically very low, often less than 2% of the total alkaloid content and sometimes much less than 0.1% of the dry leaf weight. This can be done through various methods, potentially leading to products with significantly higher levels of 7-OH than found in natural leaves.

Methods to increase 7-OH include: obtaining it through chemical synthesis from mitragynine, or by adding isolated 7-OH to kratom products. Such products are sometimes referred to as 'enhanced' or 'fortified' kratom. These processes essentially create a semi-synthetic product, where a naturally occurring compound is isolated or modified and then re-introduced or concentrated beyond natural levels.
